I think every Fire Emblem saga has a moment that acts as a reckoning for the main character, a pivot point where they realize the world just doesn't work the way they think it's supposed to. Sometimes it's a sort of cosmic reckoning, an up-ending of the rules by which their entire world functions, and sometimes it's personal. In Thracia 776, it's quite a political moment, something that can map to our own world in ways that stories about magical artifacts and supernatural bloodlines can't... and therein lies its perverse fascination for me. I quote-mined a good portion of this for my "disturbing stuff in FE5 post," but it's best to see the entire thing in context.

But why can't these slackers get proper jobs? )

It’s not very nice, but I’ll take this line of FE debate over The Power of Friendship any day, thanks.

All right.  Pieced this together during some long drives this week.

Yes, this bugs me. )

I can't really see Fury with anyone other than Levin.

Just. Can't. Not even J!fandom, wherein many writers appear to write oddball pairings on a dare (and often apologize profusely in the author's notes for their sins), can sell me on Fury/Not!Levin.  I can see Levin with other women, but I'm not convinced Fury would care about any other guy.  (I think her other predestined dudes are the good-natured chumps, Noish and Ardan.  Ardan = the anti-Levin, so maybe Fury really would look past his exterior and find something there.  But I ain't shipping it.)

But hey, I guess the game developers felt the same way. :P

Same goes for Leaf/Nanna, but for slightly different reasons. Leaf and Nanna each have perfectly compelling alternate mates in Tinny and Aless. Tinny's a drip but she has the whole Alster backstory to mine. The foundation of a relationship between Aless and Nanna appears to consist of "Keeping It in the Family LOLOLOL!" but that's actually something to go on by FE4 Gen2 standards.

[Note the game does not appear to "want" you to do either of these in spite of lovers' conversations; even though I was working for both these pairings in my current run, I still ended up with Leaf/Nanna. And Tinny won't stay with Leaf or any other lover if she inherits Freege, which seems to be the game saying "Don't Pair Her!" if you go with any of the conventional, canon-blessed, Tiltyu matchups (Lex, Levin, Azel, Claude).]

FE5 also puts Sara the creepy staffchick and Homer the male prostitute skeevy bard into the mix, leading to some very interesting scenarios.

Splitting them up makes me uncomfortable, though, in a way that fanfic shipping nonsense normally doesn't. Yeah, part of it is Leaf/Nanna being canon in FE5 (not kinda-sorta canon--it's as canon as Caeda and Marth, with the same constraints). But that alone has never stopped me from alternashipping, as my Archanea stories illustrate. I guess it's the way the relationship is written... sibling vibes and all... because the idea of Nanna going off with Aless, Celice, or anyone else leaves me feeling SO BAD for Leaf. So bad. I don't feel that way at all based on FE4, but in light of FE5, I can't feel that Nanna going off into the golden Agustrian sunset with her Mystletainn-swinging cousin would be anything other than hurtful for Leaf-- hurtful in a new and previously unprecedented way, and this after a lifetime of being Jugdral's kicked puppy. You want "embitterment"? I think you'd find it there.

[J!fandom does acknowledge this to a fair extent, and I kind of get the feeling that Aless is sometimes given to Nanna as a sop when writers want to indulge their Leaf/Sara tendencies, etc. Leaf's busy with his batty priestess or moe mage girl, and that frees up Nanna to head west. Or Nanna does indeed ditch Thracia and Leaf does a slow burn, forever.]

Yeah. I just haven't found a pairing that makes me so gosh-darn uncomfortable to split in a long, long time.

OK.  Most of us know about the PLOT TWIST in FE4... or the one in FE7... or the one in FE10... or maybe the one in FE2.  Fire Emblem likes its plot twists.  FE5 has several plot twists, and the first really bad one hits at the end of Chapter 3.

It's only beginning... )

OK.

So, after dicking around on 2X for entirely too long, I just decided to re-start Thracia 776 entirely.

I think I've been working on this since February.

Just a sweet little angst-free slice of life involving a four-year-old Leaf trying to have fun in the snow.  And GoodMommy!Lachesis.

No, really.

[Maybe it's time for that kid!fic meta, now that [personal profile] kyusil 's back.]

To counterbalance this, have a pic of Leaf and Nanna bawling their eyes out over something.  The fluffy white bits floating around make me think a Peg Knight got shot down, but I don't know.  There, now the angst quotient is back to normal.

Bonus Pic: Cecil and Janne, together at last.

PS: Lovely summer weather we're having... in April.
