So, Nintendo came up with a way to reward the suckers loyal customers who bought the 3DS prior to the price cut. They dubbed us "Ambassadors" and gave us free downloadable NES and GBA Virtual Console games.  One of the twenty games chosen as a reward was... FE8.

So my shiny 3DS has a magical copy of FE8 on it now, which I guess does lessen the sting of backward compatibility issues.  I thought about playing it, then remembered what slow going the first few chapters are and played LoZ: the Minish Cap instead.  As to why they chose FE8 over FE7, you've got me, but I was actually a little bit pleased by the decision.  It could be a way of introducing people to Fire Emblem without having the whole tactician thing be their initial experience.  OTOH, if they think world maps, grinding, and monsters are what Fire Emblem is about, then they're in for a... oh, wait, FE13 has a world map, doesn't it?  Interesting.

I'm still pissed we never got translations of the SNES Virtual Console games, though.

How sad is it that I first heard about the offer via people whining about ewwww FE8? :|
I know it's not the best, but come on, free Fire Emblem.

In an exposure sense, though, it is easier. If I were to pick an FE to recommend as someone's first, that would probably be my first choice, even if the story's unconventional.

As for the 3DS itself, I'm finally starting to get interested in some of the titles. It's backwards compatible at least for the DS, right? I can play GBA games on my PSP, so that isn't too important.

Yeah, but the 3DS is region-locked. Which poses a problem for games that don't get released in the States.

This is the reason I'm holding off on getting one. If FE13 doesn't see our shores, I guess I should start looking into Japanese 3DSes.

Oof, yeah, there is that :|
I'm pretty okay with hacking that kind of thing, but from the looks of it, there isn't a workaround available for it yet.

Found that out when I tried to play FE12 on my 3DS. Thought it was the cart at first, but when I bought a new DS it recognised it and played fine.

I don't know why things are region locked anymore, especially since the DS wasn't and now everything after it is again. Pain in the arse if you ask me.

The fact that it is region locked is why I am waiting for the PSVita instead ^^; When there is a way to break the firmware of the 3DS fully then I'll get one, since I play a lot of Japanese games. Until then sticking with my DS.

I found out via Serenes Forest that FE8 was available as an ambassador download. I immediately powered on my 3DS and downloaded it.

It'd be nice if they released a bunch of other FEs on the Virtual Console, even if you had to pay. I'd buy all of them. And then maybe I'd play my 3DS more.

It could be a way of introducing people to Fire Emblem without having the whole tactician thing be their initial experience.
I can think of worse things than the tactician. MyUnit. *cough*

And who knows, maybe Nintendo is trying to get FE8 to gain some more fans and have the game gain more in popularity.

And then they can release FE12 over here while they're at it.

I'm still pissed we never got translations of the SNES Virtual Console games, though.
At this point, I'm honestly surprised they haven't been remade yet. Then again, I guess after FE11 and 12, they can't just keep releasing remakes of FEs and not offer something new. Although no one said you can't offer something new in a remake, either.

And then they could update the FE4 artwork so maybe Sigurd doesn't have cheese wedge angles.

I have another friend who bought the 3DS before the price drop, and he's fallen in love with FE8 already. It's one I'd recommend to beginners too, as the grinding does make it more forgiving.

Also, keep in mind that these GBA titles are (tentatively) not slated for a normal release. They're exclusive to Ambassadors. So they might have chosen FE7 for a wider release (I'm also guessing this is why there were no Pokemon titles in the Ambassador lineup).

In the future I would look into the 3DS if I could get FE7 on it. ;P FE8 is pretty neat too, though, ngl. Maybe they'll put more up for download.
