Jun. 11th, 2011 09:45 pmSo, for National Go Outside Day or whatever it's called, the spouse and I did a three-hour kayak trip down the Huron River. The weather was perfect-- chilly enough that the mosquitoes weren't biting and the other people didn't show up for hours, overcast so the sun wasn't glaring, and dry in spite of some threatening clouds. There were a few unpleasant people out on the water (Lady, if you hate nature that much, why are you kayaking?), but we had a wonderful time and saw a wealth of wildlife that included herons, orioles, some very weird hybrid-looking geese, swallowtail butterflies, turtles, dead carp, and a very angry swan. And then we went for dinner at Cinco Lagos in Milford, which is good.

I think I am going to look into acquiring a pet raven. I need more corvids in my life.

I have peony envy. Mine exploded on Memorial Day and frizzled in the heat thereafter. Everyone else has these big beautiful cabbagey blossoms of white and pink and I have nothing. Sigh.
At least the spiderwort is doing really well.

My mother called when we were out on the water. I am avoiding returning the call. I suspect calling her will ruin my very good day.

My rhubarb is ready to harvest. I have sworn not to let it rot in the fridge this year.

ETA: Talking to mother did not ruin day. Great relief.

Date: 2011-06-12 01:55 am (UTC)My peonies also wilted quite badly in the heat. :( They'll be back soon, though. They always bounce back pretty fast.
Glad you had a good time kayaking. <3

Date: 2011-06-12 02:57 am (UTC)All the flowers on the apartment complex died in the heat too :( I'm hoping they come back now that the weather is cooler, they were really pretty... I hope flowers come back period. Need some more colour.
Is it bad that when I saw you mention rhubarb, I thought of all the ways to torture fictional characters with it? I'm not a big fan of rhubarb, but it's okay in pie. (Although I did have some horrendous rhubarb pie once, but it was severely overbaked, so that was the main issue. Overbaked pie makes me sad.)
Now I want pie.

Date: 2011-06-12 03:06 am (UTC)Kayaking sounds awesome, though.
And I don't think I've ever had rhubarb before...

Date: 2011-06-12 05:08 am (UTC)My husband is a bird person, and he's wanted a parakeet or cockatiel for years. But I've wanted a raven since I was eleven, so if we can make that work...
Of course, then I'd be afraid for my cat. He's a little kitty.

Date: 2011-06-12 05:10 am (UTC)Here we have sandhill cranes, too, which are amazing.
I love trumpeter swans. Mute swans are mean SOBs who are taking over the Great Lakes and need to be culled. But a swan in full-on attack mode? Jesus, those things are HUGE.
