Fic Update: "Asylum" Chapter Four
Mar. 15th, 2011 06:25 pmNow I know I'm under too much work stress/life stress. Have an outbreak of sores in my mouth plus my dreams have been weird. Weird. Last night, the dream was that my husband talked me into running for mayor of the city we live in, and I won, and then I was reading the local newspaper and seeing hate letters about myself, caricatures of myself in the cartoon section, negative comparisons to Sarah Palin in the editorials, and so on. Ugh.
It was so real that when I woke up I had to reassure myself that none of this actually happened.
-x-
I decided to retool part of "Asylum" following the tsunami and its aftereffects. The trigger in Chapter Five wasn't objectively bad, just a reference to a breached levee and some flooding, but I decided it simply wasn't necessary. Once I deleted that part and the bits that led up to it, I was able to reshape and finish Chapter Four.
This story really isn't meant as an AU. It is intended to take place in between FE11 and FE12, and the "modern" feel of the world is, I think, justifiable in light of the bizarreness of FE12 overall. I think of the world here as vaguely British, somewhere between "our" 1680 and 1880 except without a real Industrial Revolution. The FE1 manga was a considerable influence here, as the look of Archanea there IMO owed a lot to France from Louis XIV to Napoleon I. I mean, seriously, Abel was reading a newspaper in one scene!

Also...that is indeed a weird dream. :P Hope your mouth heals soon though-- those sores are never any fun. D:

And you have stemmed wineglasses, ornate chandeliers, palaces clearly modeled on Versailles, and a portrait of Nyna's father (IIRC) in full Louis Quatorze splendor. Actually, the aesthetic of the manga world is my favorite thing about it-- it's not sword-and-sorcery, it's like Alternate Earth. It has that same feel as the aristocrats in Gundam Wing, and I'm a sucker for that.

Also, manga Nina looks like an adult Relena. And Marth starts to resemble Heero after a point. It's truly odd.

Date: 2011-03-15 11:23 pm (UTC)...Marth resembling Heero is ironic. Very, very ironic. When I was hanging up some pictures of manga!Marth, I noticed the resemblance right away and then went, "First Crawford looks like Treize with a monocle, and now Marth looks like Heero. wtf is going on."
Also doesn't help that Aya looks like Zechs with red hair. ...I think there is a conspiracy.
I always thought Leon from Tales of Destiny looked like Marth...

I don't have a problem writing it. I deal with Bad Shit by writing about it-- I wrote 9/11 'fic back in the day (and kept it to myself). But I don't want to write something other people are not up to reading, especially when it could be reworked into something less upsetting.

Also, that weird fusion of historical periods is pretty much what draws me to Archanea. It doesn't feel like the typical sword-and-sorcery mashup - especially when you look at people like Camus and Nyna.
asdgfghjagjhagfaj this continues to remind me of those steampunk-FE things I was going to do.

Date: 2011-03-15 11:51 pm (UTC)Yeah. And even Marth doesn't have the Tight White Britches of FE Lordhood. Long trousers are about as medieval as high tea, you know?

Archanea is a good place for that, IMO.

Date: 2011-03-16 12:06 am (UTC)Yeah, I can see it working, on a literary level, best for Archanea, no doubt. It's more a character design project, because I haven't done any serious illustration work in a while (unless one counts the ill-thought foray into animu land I did a few months ago. hated that. never again. XD), but I could keep a lot of elements from the Archanea dudes without much trouble.

Date: 2011-03-16 03:09 am (UTC)Then again, I already want to do an elaborate one-eyed thing for Canas, so.
