Anon memes are a good place for trolls and sockpuppets.  And I guess you can say, even at their best, that anon memes kind of debase the conversation because you're not engaging in dialogue with your friends, or even your 'Net friends-- you don't know who it is you're agreeing with, or debating with.  Are they real?  Are they sincere?  Is it your voice interacting with the echoes of a sockpuppet army?

[livejournal.com profile] emblanon  is turning out to be pretty good, though... and some of us are rather obvious "anons."

And for the people who feel they're at the edges of fandom, or excluded from it, a forum like it probably feels really good.  Ike/Soren fans may feel they're bashed a lot, but seeing that Merric/Elice fan speak up was... interesting.  All the more so in that they voiced a defense of FE3!Marth.  When a fandom is as tiny as LJ Archanea fandom, making people feel unwelcome for preferring a canon pairing over the fan-favorite thing is probably a bad idea.

And the people who expressed the idea that [livejournal.com profile] fe_contest is some elite circle that would be impossible to break into... well, I was afraid of that.  But the only way to counteract that impression is for newbies to join and write and get feedback.  Otherwise, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Then there's that OTHER part of the [livejournal.com profile] emblanon  community...

Marth/Nagi is the worst and least sexy Lord/DragonChick pairing in Fire Emblem history.  She's amnesiac, possibly undead, very likely the reincarnation of Tiki's father, and might not even have a pulse.  And given that she vanishes, she might not even be 100% corporeal.  And he's... Marth.

I'm so not seeing it.

...well, I don't think they felt unwelcome so much as they felt kinda "eugh some people mentioned unfortunate implications about that pairing, I hope I'm not a bad person for still shipping it!". But like I said to Hitomi, maybe they feel unpopular because until recently there's never been much opinion PERIOD on Maric/Elice?

Ah. Well, that makes me feel kind of bad anyway. I mean, it IS canon.. so fans are supposed to find it cute/sweet/romantic (not that Fire Emblem canon can't be disturbing), right?

It just misfires so horribly for me. I mean... I find Ephraim/Eirika and Celice/Yuria more wholesome than Merric/Elice, which probably says more about me than it does about them. @_@

Not necessarily, canon doesn't always mean sweet and wholesome. Alvis/Deirdre is canon and the Bad Implications behind that are through the roof (incest is only the TIP of the iceberg for those two!).

I guess it just depends on how you see it? The biggest point of contention people seem to have is over the "oh, save me from Garnef!" line, unless there's something I missed?

Yeah, but Alvis/Diadora is part of the plot mechanics that lead to tragedy, not a part of the grand happy ending. :/

unless there's something I missed?

Didn't care for that, but I didn't really get repelled by Merric/Elice until their dialogue in FE11 where Elice gives Merric the brush-off. Yeah, it's cute, but it struck me as essentially condescending-- she views Merric as a little kid, and likes him that way. Put that with what FE12 does to the dynamic between Elice and Marth, and it all seems very creepy, like she's taking the surrogate mommy business WAY too far. And then, to have her only turn to Merric as her (adult) hero after she's been spiritually/metaphorically raped... yeah, it all leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.

True. :/ Alvis/Deirdre was only part of a grand happy ending to ALVIS, and he was dead wrong.

Aah. *nods* See, I always saw it as "well, they have this whole history between them as childhood friends"...I never thought she viewed Maric as a little kid, but I CAN see how she'd take a while to overcome her past perceptions of him. And as for her turning to him after the business with Garnef...that, in my opinion, actually warrants exploration!fic. XD; Maric and Elice don't hook up right away, but instead spend lots of time getting to know each other as their adult selves.
