Story Time! (FE12-derived)

 Inspired by shining_valor 's musings on Peg Knights and their... articles of dress.  I also got pix from kittykatloren 's gallery to illustrate this.  If I were clever, I'd do in-line pictures like penandpaper71 , but instead you get this:


See Caeda.  Caeda is a Peg Knight.  Caeda is a virtuous and true maiden.

Caeda will be rewarded for this by finding someone who loves her forever and ever.

See Catria.  Catria is also a Peg Knight, but she has naughty bad feelings!  Bad Catria.  This means no one will ever love her.

But we know that all of you playing along at home secretly lust after naughty bad girls.  So here is a picture of Bad Catria for all of you to enjoy in your sordid little hearts.

Because, seriously... while on the one hand I was happy to get a cheesecake picture of Catria, given what they've done to her in the game, it does appear to say something.

Well, it's cheesecake in the sense that she pretty clearly doesn't have any underpants on. That is pretty racy for Fire Emblem, no?

I'm pretty sure that I can count the things that I like about FE12 on one hand. I'm still waiting nervously for a few base conversations, but even if I make a leap of faith and assume that they're good (Which is probably a pretty big leap by this point), I doubt that anything is going to fix the bad.

Catria's treatment in the new canon is odd. She's one of the more popular characters in the games, more so then even her sisters, I think, based on the amount of fanart and chatter that I've seen, and the game gives her a lot of attention as far as development goes (None of which I like, but at least some attention was paid to her, unlike a number of other characters.) and some extra official art, but then misses out on little details like updating her profile picture, which takes so much less effort. On the other hand, I've seen very little negative fan chatter that isn't aimed at the graphics or reclassing, so perhaps Intelligent Systems knows what it's doing better then we think (Maybe people really do like Bad!Catria).

I give up. FE12!Catria is an issue for me because I'm really irritated by self-pitying basket cases, who can't cope with reality (I hope that doesn't sound too harsh. I might be a bit irritated by this whole situation).

Well, I saw it and I'm going to respond to it anyway! I think Catria's feelings for Marth are intended to be taken seriously by the player because the presentation is serious and a stark contrast to the comedy and verbal irony of Melissa's infatuation. IS doesn't bother to show us why Catria feels that way, which is annoying... but they leave the blanks unfilled for many other relationships, after all.

It still reads like infatuation to me. I could very well be wrong in that interpretation, but her reaction is so... overdone and almost ridiculous to me that I have trouble seeing as anything more then a schoolgirl crush. But that's me. Melissa's actions seem a bit comic and fanciful, but that's in line with her general presentation in the game and my recollection of her realization of the reality of the situation is that it didn't sound that way to me from the synopsis given by shimizu_hitomi (Disturbing, because of My Unit's contributions, but not really comical), unless the actual dialogue is comical. Catria is presented in a very different way in the game and this is more in line with what they've done with her character (I don't like what they've done in her overall, but this part of it does seem to be in line with what they've turned her into, even if I dislike her FE12 self). It wouldn't make sense for Catria to behave as Melissa even if they both have similar feelings for the same man because they are drastically different characters and Melissa's crush actually gets more attention then Catria's. They both still strike me as being overdone to an extreme degree. Plus, there is the lack of an ending change. That could be written off to laziness, but they put a fair amount of effort into her, even if it all sucks. If the point was that Catria dies alone and miserable, unable to cope with Marth not loving her, why doesn't her ending appear to reflect that much?

I'm sorry. I'll stop. I don't mean to so contrary. D:
