FE12: SNES Canon Goes BOOM!
Jul. 16th, 2010 05:06 pm Happy birthday to
penandpaper71 !
Now, onto the cracked-out part of the day.
myaru , if you're paying attention, this is HUGE.
Now, over at SerenesForest, poster VincentASM, a reliable source of info in the lead-up to the release of FE12, had the following to say about Michalis in this spoiler-ridden thread.
"I also noticed that Michalis's ending says that he ruled over Medon and also became king on another continent(s)."
Holy shit. The post-war political situation on Archanea just got a hell of a lot more interesting. Well, I was complaining last year about the paucity of leadership figures and how Marth didn't have any fascinating peer rivals the way later FE lords often do. Problem solved, yo. And how.
So, does Minerva still go to the convent?
You want Epic Cosplay? Check out Pope Sirius here. Poor Marth-- the creators didn't warn him that this remake took place in Bizarro World.

Date: 2010-07-17 02:04 am (UTC)I'm finding the possibility that a lot of characters are going to end up with an ending rewrite more and more probable as more information comes in about the game, particularly those that don't fair well in FE3 like Abel and Est. Apparently, this is the kinder version of Archanea.
I hope that the creators will give Minerva a more fitting ending then she got in the original. I really disliked Minerva's ending in FE3, but I've whined about that before, so I'll stop going on about that now.
And I'm still laughing at Pope Sirius.
Thank you for the happy birthday wish! ^_^

Date: 2010-07-17 04:21 am (UTC)Mitigating the godawful bleakness of Archanea is one thing. Upending the apparent moral balance of the universe wherein murdering your father in cold blood is just simply Not OK and making it... OK... disturbs me.

So, okay, you want to talk about having to rewrite fic thanks to canon changes? :P
Screw canon, I'm writing it anyway.
Damn. So he takes the reins back. (What is this 'king on another continent' nonsense, though? Is Archanea three steps away from world exploration? Or are we talking Valencia?) I imagine Minerva is ecstatic about getting rid of the crown, but on the other hand, Michalis betrayed her the last time he was in charge. Apparently his character changes enough that he's allowed to do this (when you'd think both Nyna and Marth would have a problem with his return, otherwise), but... but.
I know, big impact on Archanean politics. But all I can think of is the siblings. XD
If Minerva goes to a convent, I will facepalm.

That's the spirit. Honestly, this change pisses me off, as much as it is silly to get upset about a taken-out-of-context tidbit from a game not even translated yet. But part of what I like about Archanea (and FE in general) is that there are, you know, RULES. The end is not allowed to justify the means, and up to now there was clearly a line in the sand that Michalis and some other characters crossed-- and they paid for it. If Michalis gets a happy ending, why the flying fuck does Hardin have to die? Michalis wasn't even possessed when he did any of his crimes. Why don't we go flying over to Jugdral and wrap Trabant and Alvis up in a big hug, tell them everything's OK, and then they can party with Celice and Altenna and the rest of the kids?
Apparently his character changes enough that he's allowed to do this (when you'd think both Nyna and Marth would have a problem with his return, otherwise), but... but.
His entry over at FE wikia has already been edited, and I could tell it was one of the SerenesForest posters that did it. It sez: "After the war he resumes his position as King of Medon, only to later leave and become the king of a kingdom on a different continent."
So, he bails on his duties anyway! What. The. Shit. Talk about having your cake and eating it too. I bet the sisters DO end up in the damned convent, because this whole "other continent" shit still allows for Marth... or Nyna... or whoever the fuck... to take over Macedon anyway.
And I'm not even touching this "other continent" business yet. I hope he lands in Valencia and Alm drop-kicks his gorgeous ass straight to Jugdral.
And you know what? A living, breathing, cleaned-up and pretty Michalis just negates one the most gut-punching moments in the FE3 script... when Minerva lies to her little sister. Thanks, IS!

Date: 2010-07-17 04:56 am (UTC)I can see them saying that Michalis gets a pass because he planned to betray Dolhr all along - never mind that double-crossing gets its own special place in hell according to most cosmologies, whether the end result is good or not. It could also be argued he redeems himself in trying to save Maria and giving the party the means to oppose Gharnef, but since that didn't save him in the last game, I'm not sure why it's magically enough this time. Especially when, as you say, he's fully aware of what he's doing, and commits his crimes in cold blood, while Hardin is POSSESSED, manipulated into starting a war, and then pays the ultimate price.
Also, what happened to his "I don't give a damn about this country anymore, do what you want with it" line? Seriously, now he wants to rule? But-- then he gives the throne up again to run off somewhere and rule a new country, because... because. HELLO INCONSISTENCY. That's worse than Minerva's 180 at the end of FE3.
(Alm can kick Michalis's gorgeous ass right over here. Just saying.)
I'm not down with this change. It feeds the inner-fangirl, but it betrays Michalis as a character, when part of his appeal is his tragic flaws and the end they lead him to.

Absolutely. That moment was painful even with just a script.

I mean, hell, what's being king of some random place on the map going to offer him that being king of his own country and people doesn't? A fresh start? Never having to deal with Marth? Geez, Michalis. This is Planet Fire Emblem-- there are annoying kids like Marth on EVERY continent!
but it betrays Michalis as a character, when part of his appeal is his tragic flaws and the end they lead him to.
That's what it looks like, yeah.

Date: 2010-07-17 07:20 am (UTC)I'm gonna be keeping an eye out on pegasusknight.com and check out the script myself whenever they get around to dumping it. Not that I don't trust Vincent, but sometimes his translations can be off.
Though this is such a HUGE change that even if he's a little off, it's still like... wtf.
