I had a feeling that reading about Custer and Sitting Bull would unlock something in my brain, but I'd hoped it would be a 'fic involving actual in-depth battle scenes, like "To Freely Serve" (Norne 'Fic) or "Widening Gyre" (Peg Sis 'Fic).  Instead, I ended up flying through the second installment in my planned Caeda Trilogy, "The View From A Glass Kingdom" (Gundam Wing reference totally intentional).

Reading these notes will spoil the twist in the 'fic.

I warned you.

OK, fine.

"Motherland" covered Caeda up to the point where she finally leaves Talys for Altea, and the third part of the series covers a slice of her early married life.  That one's intended as an antidote to the Marth/Caeda fluff out there-- not an angst-fest, but NOT fluffy.  This, however, is a snapshot from the early days of the War of Heroes.  Caeda is frustrated at being sidelined by the expedition to Grunia Grust-- seriously, her wedding just got shafted by someone else's problems, and she doesn't even get to accompany Marth this time around.  By the opener of the 'fic, she's quite worried over the grim news from Macedon (revolt, Minerva missing, and so on) and is in a fair amount of pain over the just-reported death of family friend General Lorenz.  She hasn't heard from Marth, all the incoming news is bad, and all she gets to do is mooch around Altea Castle and wait.

This was written as kind of an exercise in various forms of irony; I like "calm before the storm" works, particularly ones where people can read enough into a situation to know something bad is going down yet they get the details wrong.  Caeda's conclusions are totally logical, but wrong, because the situation defies all logic and a crazy man is running the show.  Particularly good/bad in this is the glimpse of Abel and Est before everything goes to hell.

Oh yeah, Norne.  She's there 'cause I like her, and I already reference her as Draug's girlfriend in "No Direction Home," which follows this in Tales of the Unified Kingdom chronology.

Also, let me go on the record as saying that the original plan to hold Caeda hostage... or kill her... is one of the sickest tricks Hardin tries to pull in FE3.  The idea seems to have been to totally break Marth-- crack his psyche, shatter his soul, something along those lines.  But Elice's selfless nature got in the way of that part of the plan, allowing Caeda to escape.
BTW, the new Arcade Fire song sucks.

*chuckles*

(If I had a farthing for every time I have had to save the Sanc Kingdom in one of the SRW games ... !)

Speaking as a Norne fan, I approve of her inclusion. :-) And having to wait for FE3 to be localized (as FE12) is making me run in circles!

I really do wonder how the gaiden characters will factor into FE12, if they will at all. But I <3 my little Norne, and I'd be tickled to see her again in a game.

Since you mentioned the concept of Marth/Norne, which had never once occurred to me before, I admit I've been toying with the idea. Can't quite nail it down yet, but I am trying.
