Fic, Food, Miscellany
May. 18th, 2010 09:52 pmI love evenings so quiet I can hear the water circulating in the koi pond two houses down.
Once upon a time, there was a lady who made floral and herbal jelly. Really excellent jelly, actually, with a jewel-like clarity and intense flavor. The lady no longer makes the jelly, but her recipes are still available, and I made her Lavender-Glazed Meatballs for dinner tonight. I put in about 25% too much meat, which made for very crumbly balls, but the flavor was perfect. I used to use English lavender from Norfolk exclusively in my cooking, but this time I used some Maui-grown lavender and it turned out fine. That rose-flavored cheesecake is also well worth the effort.
[I hope this doesn't turn into a food blog. That's all I use my Twitter account for as it is.]
So, I finished Chapter Two of "Dark Sun of Desire," aka the Nyna story, and will sit on it for a couple of days. I think I'm getting some idea of where to ultimately go with the story, thank goodness. But the direction it's taking is pretty darned dark; this version of Archanea is clearly a crapsack world, even more so than usual. And that spills over even after the setting shifts to Valencia.
More negotiations tomorrow; the next two days will be long ones, actually, but then I might get out of town for the weekend.

And Archanea becoming a crapsack is a feeling I am coming to know rather alarmingly well. Heh. Are you a bad influence on me?

Date: 2010-05-19 02:47 am (UTC)I made Swedish meatballs once, but I used the wrong kind of cheese (Fontina instead of Gjetost). Good taste, alarming texture to the sauce. This was about fifteen years ago, in Tennessee, so I had no idea where to even find Gjetost and was lucky to get the Fontina.
I probably am a bad influence on you, heh. Though, to be fair, Archanea really is a crapsack. Even TV Tropes agrees, so it must be true. But my "main sequence" of 'fics kind of assumes a "Perfect Ending" playthrough of FE3 and this story clearly does not.

You've convinced me Archanea is a dark, depressing (but interesting!) place. Speculation on the craptastic nature of some of the cultural assumptions, the fates many of the characters eventually met, never mind the politics, makes it way more interesting than just the game could ever be. As a matter of fact, FE11 should be the poster child for any argument on the good fanfic can do.
I'm looking forward to chapter two. <3 Maybe it'll make me edit the Minerva fic.
Maybe.

Heh, excellent!
I'll try to get Chapter Two of DSoD up soon; I accidentally wrote a chunk of it in the wrong tense and had to correct that. I really do want to see that Minerva story, though, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.
