Well, since I was sleepy yesterday and will be busy as HELL tomorrow (and not playing FE13, sob), here's an addendum to the FE4 rant.
Just to give characterization in FE4 the shaft, here's a complete viable pairing list in which the parent units never exchange a word outside of snuggly talk in the home castle. Plus some bonus lists that get progressively more sketchy.
Here ya go.
Take 1, Conservation of Holy Weapons Edition
Aideen/Beowulf-- Aideen talks with too many guys and she has no skillz, so we're going with this. Yo,
solmedes , somebody on GameFaqs attested recently that this is, indeed, the best Lester you can breed without bow inheritance.
Aira/Noish-- Scathach will be a little less than optimal but still perfectly good.
Lachesis/Finn-- Because why the hell not? Especially with a Speed bonus for Nanna thrown in the bargain.
Sylvia/Lex-- Elite and good Def on Sylvia's kids is no bad thing. Just don't expect Corple to be that good when he does promote.
Fury/Claude-- There's your Valkyrie staff. Thankfully Fury has Pursuit so her kids don't get screwed over by Claude's null skillset.
Briggid/Holyn-- Should provide an optimal Patty, and you getIchival Yewfelle regardless.
Tiltyu/Levin-- There's your Holsety. And a bonus for Tinny.
[Note that more than half these pairings are indeed pretty popular despite lack of lovers' conversations. Sometimes "crack" works.]
Take 2, Allocation of Skills Edition
Aideen/Levin-- If we're gonna waste Holsety, we can at least give some magic to Lana. Lester, you're on your own.
Aira/Jamka-- Supposedly Odo blood helps cancel out Jamka's shitshitshit SKL and the kids get good HP and Speed.
Lachesis/Azel-- The kiddies get Pursuit and Nanna's magic'll be good. Promoted Azel can even pass down swords.
Sylvia/Dew-- Dew passes on decent MAG growth and the kids'll be cheap to feed thanks to Bargain.
Fury/Alec-- This offers Awareness for Fee. Some say this is overrated. I say, hell, you can't make it all about Sety.
Briggid/Lex-- Anything that aids you in leveling up Patty is good, no? And Faval will be a tank.
Tiltyu/Finn-- I know this one works just fine thanks to the crazy Pursuit/Prayer/Wrath combo.
Take 3, Well It Works On Paper Edition
Aideen/Finn-- This offers Pursuit, crazy Luck, and +5 Magic for Lana. Lester should at least be able to dodge when he's failing to kill things.
Aira/Claude-- I hear it's impossible to screw up AiraKids. This is one way to find out.
Lachesis/Lex-- People do this a lot. I hear it works despite lack of Pursuit.
Sylvia/Holyn-- Maybe Leen will be able to hit stuff with that Defence sword Sylvia passes down.
Fury/Azel-- Hey, why not? Sety with advanced Fire tomes is still Sety and Azel's magic growths don't get wasted.
Briggid/Dew-- No, this isn't actually predestined in the sense that they never talk to one another. The kidlets get Bargain and Patty benefits from sword skills if you promoted Dew. I hope you promoted Dew.
Tiltyu/Ardan-- OK, we're hitting the bottom of the barrel here, but the kids get Ambush.
There. Three entire pairing lists that ought to not be terrible that don't involve a single "predestined" pairing and hence no character development whatsoever during Gen1. Enjoy.

Date: 2013-02-04 03:00 am (UTC)Aideen/Levin: Err, Levin's magic growth is actually kinda shitty, which resulted in an Arthur that coulnd't ever seem to get magic for me. His speed is where it's at
Aira/Jamka: The kiddies get every single multi-hit skill in the game and are the only ones who can, which makes for happy fun times
Aira/Claude: Mage killers?
And yeah, a lot of the pairings that happen in FE4 really do seem more like desperate "you're not too repulsive" hookups with unintended consequences.

Aira/Claude: Mage killers?
Yeah. And, really-- given the prevalence of magic enemies in endgame, that sounds awfully appealing.

Hell, some of the predestined ones come across that way. There's some squirm-worthy dialogue, even taking the oddities of the fan adaptation into account.
ETA: IMO, most pairings can be explained in the following sentence: Silesian winter nights are very long and very cold.
