Fic Update: "Distant Light, Part One"
Dec. 3rd, 2009 12:07 amOnce again, the 'fic I post isn't anywhere near the top of my priorities list. But I needed a change of pace, so here comes "Distant Light," a look at the Archanean magic system that happens to focus on Merric and some of his weird relationships.
The FE1 manga so polluted my brain that I have never been able to view the relationship between Merric and Marth in the way that I did before picking up said manga. This does not mean that "Distant Light" is shounen ai or anything like that. Merric's stated interest is the proper canonical choice of Princess Elice. But there is some kind of undercurrent of strangeness going on here-- there's an imbalance in power, an imbalance in education, in "talent," in destiny, and so forth. The very fact that Merric and Marth are shown in this 'fic as having an almost normal schoolboy friendship is something of a transgression in itself, because the social and military hierachy doesn't work that way (and they both know it).
[I don't think Merric, in canon, ever just refers to Marth by his first name. I took more creative license than usual, I think. They end up family by marriage anyway. Thhpt.]
Anyway, this is part One of a two-parter. Enjoy... unless I already scared any potential audience away. Um... I put a lot of work into showing how magic works in Archanea. World-building! You guys like world-building, right?
