There are a lot of names-- historical and literary-- that seem like surprising omissions from Fire Emblem. I mean, maybe some obscure mini-boss in FE2 or FE5 had a wonderful name, but after Aran/Arran and such, we can't completely rule out a name just 'cause something similar was already done.  Frex, "Fred" was in FE5, but as a name it lacks the historical punch of "Frederick," and we only got that with FE13.

And now, we have one of those really solid evocative names bestowed upon a fan-fap-favorite.

Yep.  Tiamo is now Cordelia.

CORDELIA

COR-DEE-LIA

Awesome.  I am so calling her "Cordy" from now on.

I mean, I mentally call her "the red-headed Catria knockoff" but Cordy will work just fine.

I think I can safely blame IS for this one. They even gave her a unique CG in the 'beach episode' DLC.

And I'm okay with Cordelia. "Tiamo" struck as either an odd homage to Tiamat (Titania) or misplaced Spanish ("I love you").

It's undeniably deliberate. She's got at least one conversation that is just about her breast size. Yet another symptom of this game being really gross toward women so far :\
But I'm honestly more grossed out by the people defending these decisions at this point. IS, at least, is profiting from it. Fanboys are just crying when women point it out because, uh, something something feminazi? No, GTFO.

I'm an Idea Factory fan. I can't defend decisions like those, heh. It's definitely all profit. (Makes me wonder when we'll start seeing Tiamo Cordelia figurines and the like, since developers who go the fan service route usually have that in mind from the get-go.) Dialogue oddities are one of those things that a 'ficcer can choose to ignore if they clash with the tone of the story, especially if they're irrelevant to the plot.

Here's the thing: I play games with this crap all the time. Like Soul Calibur. I love Soul Cal, jiggle physics and all.

But that's been there from the get-go. FE's not a magical paradise of feminism, no, but I'd come to expect better than this. Maybe it's heightened by the complete bastardization of existing ladies, too, but there's a definite shift. And as a woman, I can't help but feel a little betrayed by it -- and insulted by the notion that a crappily composed pic of Chrom in shorts is supposed to somehow put me on equal footing again.

*nods*

They've sold out, more or less, becoming more like other developers and following what will make them the most money, apparently to their benefit, considering how FE13 has sold in Japan thus far, but yes, catering to a money-making niche is sure to alienate fans who are used to the series being more ... conservative (not quite the best term) than many other JRPGs.

I don't know. It's odd to see FE becoming more like other games I play, considering that's very not Nintendo.

And yet it goes more conservative, too -- from Ike and Heather to "everyone is straight and has cute babies". It's no doubt a money-making move, and NoA ramping up the hype BIG time backs that up.

I still hope they're going to use the money for something riskier and weird. Kind of like I hope Square-Enix is doing with all the ports and derpy spinoffs and all. Unlikely, but yeah.

That "like everything else" sentiment is exactly what's throwing me. I ditched an Atlus SRPG recently because it was too anime, too waifu-y, and I thought, "why should I play this when there's an SRPG franchise that doesn't try to pander to this demographic?" And now we've got moe dragon girls who want to play house with you ~for real~.

I still have hopes for the game, don't get me wrong, but it really does sadden me that this is the approach IS chose to take. Even if NoA ditches some of it, it doesn't change the fact that it was intended to be there.

Seeing as to how there aren't too many Atlus RPGs of this type, do you mean Devil Survivor (1 or 2)? Because there's definitely fan service there, though nothing on the order of Agarest or Ar Tonelico.

Generally speaking, too, I don't see any "riskier and weird" happening. A company that happens upon a sure-fire way (for the most part) of making money will stick to that way, I have noticed. Perhaps not always. Square Enix made Final Fantasy Type-0, definitely "riskier", and then strangely decided not to localize it.

Rondo of Swords, actually. Might just be Atlus-published, but I still could not get into it.

Mmmm. . .I don't know. FFXIV was a pretty big risk for Square-Enix (one that backfired tremendously). XII as well, I'd say -- sticking it in a less-known world with weird mechanics and crazy prose styles? XIII was too, especially with putting it out on two systems, one of which they'd never worked with before. All came after long stints of remake-spinoff-cash-cow stuff. And IS has done some weird things on the heels of huge successes, too -- `I think Tellius, in a lot of ways, was a pretty big departure from what had worked, and not a departure that seemed geared purely to sell more. As has been discussed, FE9 didn't sell well at all, and yet Radiant Dawn still happened. I don't think we have any indicator anymore of what can and cannot be expected, especially not with this SMT thing coming out of absolutely nowhere.

Also, there are talks of Type-0 localization, with the same guy who did Tactics and XII at the head! I'm not really interested, but there's a lot of love for it out there.

I'd forgotten about Rondo. (Game FAQs says it's Atlus-published, not Atlus-developed, so you're right.) It's one that I don't have, but it's also one that's very poorly regarded, so it hasn't really been a priority.

I'd counter that FFXVI was Square Enix being extremely lazy, since they essentially retained the FFXI formula, but farmed out most of the development to firms in China. (The first build of the game was entirely in Mandarin, somebody discovered, and that kinda clued people in.) XII is an odd duck, a hybrid that might have been pretty damned good if they had been able to maintain consistent development. (Losing Matsuno in the middle of the creative process screwed that game.) XIII is only risky in the sense that it cost a shit-ton of money to make, hence why Square Enix has now stretched that game engine into two sequels with all of the stuff they had left over from the original. Otherwise, it adheres quite firmly to what they believe works for their target demographic. ... But there were so many copies of XIII sold back to video game stores in Japan that they refused to take any more.

And the Tellius games are Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits, but with Fire Emblem. It's a creative move I've never quite understood, but one that blew up in the faces of the developers. As to what happened with FE11 and FE12, I still haven't figured that out, but I do know those games didn't meet sales expectations, either, and the only explanations I've seen concern rampant piracy of DS games, both in the U.S. and Japan. (I still maintain that's the most likely reason we didn't get FE12. Note that the 3DS is currently very difficult to crack.)

Hey, if they can do Type-0 and get Mr. Smith to do the localization, I'd be all for it. That's one game by that shitastic zombie company that I'd actually play.

When it was Artur I figured maybe they just didn't know. When it was Aran/Arran Rhys/Wrys I figured the real name came second and they didn't know. Now I'm starting to suspect that maybe they're fucking with us.
