Some Headcanon/Meta to start 2013 off
Jan. 1st, 2013 12:47 pmI was gonna post this on tumblr, but that's just not the place for text discussions.
Trabant says something interesting to Leaf in their boss dialogue in FE4.
"Blume should've taken care of you when he had the chance."
I didn't initially give it much thought; Trabant's all bluster in those dialogues anyway, given he's pretty blatantly trying to get himself killed. But I think Trabant honestly means exactly what he says there. Why would that be?
Well, he knows the charade with Altenna can't last forever. By Chapter 9 of FE4, when Celice'n'Friends are on his turf, he's openly discussing Ethlin in front of Arion! The designers' notes indicate that Trabant was open to the idea of Arion and Altenna being married, and even in Thracia I doubt that would fly unless the wholekidnapping "adoption" thing came to light. Also, he was was educating Altenna to be a ruler-- presumably a ruler of a Unified Thracia. At some point, Trabant will have to fess up... but he wants to do it on his own terms, under a controlled set of circumstances.
And what better circumstance would there be than right after Blume finally eliminates pesky little Leaf? Then Trabant can sit Altenna down and lay out her special sekrit destiny. All the little weirdnesses will make sense, and Altenna and Arion will throw themselves into the fight against the Empire with renewed vigor. Something like that. And until that day comes, all Trabant need do is maintain his balancing act.
But while Trabant is a big-picture kind of guy, it's safe to say his vision didn't include Celice coming in with a Murderer's Row of holy weapon users in tow. Blume goes down, and Leaf steps into the power void in Northern Thracia, and the next thing Trabant knows that damn kid is in Trabant's own backyard making trouble.
Leaf may've fantasized about doing in Trabant personally, but it doesn't seem Trabant felt that way about Leaf. He didn't want to kill him-- didn't want to face him, even. Offing Cuan's brat was Blume's job; preserving the major line of Noba and installing Altenna&Arion as rulers was Trabant's game. Trabant likely had a whole little scenario planned out, and knew where all the pieces needed to be, and it was really only a matter of time before the full power of Thorhammer came down on Leaf… and then Celice up-ends the board and everything goes to hell.
And Trabant has to choice but to hand over Gungnir to Arion and head out for the showdown with Leaf he never wanted, one that really should've never come to pass. Poor bastard.

Date: 2013-01-02 02:09 am (UTC)Someone over in the FE4 LP on Something Awful theorized that Claude spent the interbellum period hiding out and lost in prophetic trances and that the need for "legs and eyes" was more metaphorical than literal. Not sure I see it that way but it'd be an interesting thing to explore.
