Great.  Now that I've sworn off entering the contest (for modly impartiality), my brain seizes on a crack pairing I so want to write.

Screw it.  I'll write Palla/Arran anyway.  It'll probably spill into 7K words, knowing me.  Thanks, Pixiv!

Writing for Magvel is interesting, but there's no 'ficcer feeling quite like the feeling when an Archanea plotbunny sinks its claws into my arm.  I've been meaning to write an Eirika-in-Frelia piece for aeons now, but I can't quite get it off the ground.  And then the Peg Sisters come barreling along and I get that visceral must write feeling.

Man, watching the footage of the London riots is depressing as hell.  It looks like Detroit-- people smashing up their fellow citizens' businesses and driving them out of their homes, and for what?  How does gutting somebody's family furniture store or plundering Sainsburys (it's a supermarket) stick it to David Cameron, or the Met, or anyone?  How does destroying the brick-and-mortar fabric of your own city right a bad situation?

Take it from Detroit, baby.  It doesn't.  All you get is a big vacant hole where your city used to be.

I actually never understood while some mods feel like they can't enter a contest of a comm they mod (or run). Maybe I'm just naive but why should I judge a story differently just because the author happens to be the mod of the comm? Why does it matter? It doesn't make sense to me.

Perception is 95% of reality. If the appearance of bias makes people cheesed off, and unwilling to participate, and willing to run to the anon meme and complain about how the contest is the province of elitists... well, let's make the appearance of bias a non-issue.

It's not like Myaru and I had been writing for it much, anyway. I was getting terrible with even remembering deadlines.

I don't know about Mark, but my thought is more along the lines of, "Hmm, since a mod is also tallying up the votes, that's a huge, glaring opportunity to favor her/himself/friends/whatever." Not that I think mods do that, for the record. Just, if I mod a contest of some kind, I keep out of the entries for the sake of neutrality.

Since I'm not writing fic these days it's not even an issue, but fandom has been... sensitive lately. It's a political move too, so to speak.

I think people feel comfortable enough to vote as they desire in this fandom. Honestly, name recognition and community respect probably does more than mod status -- but even then, I feel like voting has been quite fair in that regard.

As mutually destructive as a wrong for a wrong is, there's something to be said for intolerable destruction's visibility. It's much more difficult to brush off than a nonviolent protest. Smaller-scale nonviolent protests are brushed off all the time until someone gets martyred.

That said, there's a lot of injustice in that rage being directed at people who aren't even involved in the original injustice.

Regardless of the motivation or the make-up of the rioters and looters (seems to be a mixed bag in all regards, including opportunists), destroying your own backyard, and those of your neighbors, is basically counterproductive IMO.

I feel pretty strongly about it, as I live in what is arguably America's #1 example of a failed city. The reasons why Detroit exploded in '67 make sense. The anger makes sense. The anger was justifiable. The explosion was, IMO, understandable. The results? Tragic. It sent a message, all right-- but something tremendous was warped in the transmission.

My colleague shanaqui is in London at present, relaying updates, but it seems that no one there can make sense of what is happening. I have yet to see any real explanation why the rioting started in the first place!

Well, the catalyst for the initial riot was the shooting by police of a man named Mark Duggan-- and, keep in mind, a police shooting is a rather different event there than it is Stateside.

As to how that spurred riots from Croydon to Manchester, your guess is as good as mine.

I actually would really like to see what you do with Palla/Arran. I still have a kind of WTF reaction to the concept, but I also haven't put that much thought into it. I'd be interested in seeing your take on it.
