mark_asphodelOkay. I took a damn long hiatus from playing FE4 because a) it is unhealthy to sit at my computer any longer than I already do and b) the playthrough I wanted to continue with most was stuck at a bottleneck of RNG screwage.
Basically, no one could kill Chapter 8 Ishtar. Shanan was too far away, Holyn!Faval missed with his opening shot, and Ares left her at 2 HP and died under return fire. Given Faval should be able to handle her upon recruitment, I was pretty pissed, so after soft resets and hard resets didn't do a damn thing, I left it sitting for a couple of months. Today I dusted off the emulator and reset the RNG by sending Finn into the arena to lay waste to it. This worked[*], and Faval made Ishtar go bye-bye so I could continue the damned chapter.
Anyway, I cleared Chapter 8 yesterday, and here's how the kiddies stand going into Chapter 9 and Thracia:
Seliph: Level 15.56 and stacked with a bunch of rings. Married Lana on what must've been turn 49 of the previous chapter.
Leif: Level 22.72, promoted and packing an arsenal.
Ares: Level 19.95 (dammit). Got the Thief Bracelet this time so he can fund his Mystletainn habit more easily.
Johalva: Level 16.97, was useful a couple of times in Ch 8.
Jamke!Ulster: An under-leveled 11.93 because he got left in the dust when Leif and Arthur got their horseys. Still pretty good though.
Alec!Delmud: Level 14. Not as bad as the Dew!Delmud I had last time, as he has a whopping 40 HP (-_-), but not... good? Decked out with the Defence Sword and Armor Cutter and Wing Clipper he can do some damage and he's not a downright liability like my last version of Delmud. But I didn't expect a whole hell of a lot from Alec's kid, did I?
Finn!Lester: Level 17.53 and has already matched or surpassed the Lvl 21.4 Midayle!Lester I had last time in every stat except SPD. SPD is a lousy-ass 10, not gonna lie. Yeah, it was a long wait to get the Hero Bow but Lester did credibly until he snagged it and then he proceeded to slaughter things left and right. Also, he can dodge. Put a Speed Ring on him and I'm all set.
Lex!Arthur, Lvl 26.32. Whoo-hoo for Elite. Arthur has a whopping 59 HP, 16 STR, and 19 DEF. He also has a miserable 12 in actual magic and basically can't kill anything worth a damn unless Wrath/Ambush activates. Since he's a lightly-armored tank, that doesn't happen much, but presumably Endgame enemies will chew him up a bit more. He's got the Pursuit Ring on him.
Holyn!Faval, Lvl 15.2. With 25 SKL at least he can hit things, which is more than I can say for Jamke!Faval.
Lewyn!Ced: The usual at Lvl 18.47. My backup plan in case the other boys turned out sucky.
Sharlow: Recruiting him this chapter. Elite is good and that 'Zerk Staff had better be worth it.
Julia: Lvl 16.79.
Jamke!Larcei: Measly Lvl 10.53 but holding her own thanks to skills and Mama's sword collection. Married Shanan when I wasn't looking, which irked me 'cause I wanted to pair him with Patty this run.
Alec!Nanna: Lvl 20.95, promoted, a handy girl with a magic sword. Likely as good as last time's Dew!Nanna by the time she tops out. Only drawbacks and SPD and LCK are not as good this time.
Finn!Lana: Lvl 23.23. Her MCG is 27 thanks to that Chapter 7 statboost conversation and that's all I have to say about that. Midayle!Lana was a little beast on promotion and this one is a beast packing additional Magic and super dodging abilities. Now married to Seliph.
Lex!Tinny: Lvl 20.34, promoted. Since she's not as sturdy as Arthur, the Wrath/Ambush thing is easier to activate, but she doesn't have Pursuit. Mm.
Holyn!Patty. Lvl 8.88 'cause she got lost in the village-saving shuffle but that's a far cry from where Jamke!Patty was by Endgame. I maintain hopes of promoting her.
Lewyn!Fee, Level 13.97. The usual. She's packing a jillion-kill Brave Lance and a Fire Sword. Plus she and Oifaye got hitched.
Laylea: Lvl 8.8, made out of tissue paper. Screw Charisma. Delmud gives me enough trouble already-- why do I want an even more fragile Charismabot holding me back? Plus she can't inherit the Knight Bracelet the way Leen can and she can't really earn money to buy one and so is dependent on Patty to scrape up the gold. She's way cuter than Leen, but this kinda sucks.
Anyway, I'd figured a promoted Arthur and Leif could really take on Blume the way that the boss conversations imply. Nope. Big Shield activated constantly. Leif took an axe to him, Arthur took a Brave Sword to him, and finally I gave up and sent in Shanan. Let's hope Chapter Nine goes a little more according to plan.
* Moral-- leave someone with a 100% chance of completing the arena in reserve for situations like this. In forthcoming chapters this will likely be Forseti!Ced. This isn't a problem with other FE games because the rest don't use permanent saves like FE4.
