I'll use "Aoife" when either hell freezes over or it's the official localization. 'Til then, Oifaye.
My first impressions of them.
Most Useless Tactician Ever. And then he grows up to be Hardin with 100% less turban and 100% less evil.
What I think of their design.
Kid!Oifaye is unbearably derpy. The center-parted hair. The dazzling white uniform. His adult design is pretty slick but IMO just recalls Hardin a wee bit too much. I dig the fact his hair went from dirty blond to brown over the years, though.
What I think of their role in the story.
Well, you know, "Tactician of a war that went horribly wrong" could have been awesome, but IMO his Part One characterization is a baaaaaaad violation of "show don't tell." He doesn't advise worth jack squat. Hell, IIRC Finn offers up more actual advice (Prologue *and* Chapter 4) than Oifaye ever does. So IMO he pretty much sucks in Gen 1 until Sigurd hands him Seliph and tells him to get out of there. Gen2 basically redeems him as a character but again IS kind of muffed it by having him disappear for two entire chapters. He has nothing to say in Ch7 except for a conversation with Delmud/Tristan, nothing at all in Ch8, and then in Ch9 he briefly pops up to attempt to stick up for Seliph in front of Lewyn and then Seliph tells him nicely to stand down. That could've been a great moment if we had seen more of him once Lewyn arrived. After that his presence is a little bit better-- in essence, the Thracia arc diminishes him like it does half the Gen2 cast. IMO.
What I think of their interactions with other characters.
He basically just talks to Sigurd in Gen1. Eh. In Gen 2, I really like his relationship with the kids-- what we see of it-- and wish there'd been more follow-up on stuff. How about a scene with adult!Shanan? How about more confrontation with Lewyn... especially with Fee being his sole predestined romance? (Totally ship Oifaye/Fee.)
My favorite aspect of the character overall.
I guess that there is that actual sense of a growth arc from this peppy little kid to an adult warrior who had a long, hard road toward victory. But he's not a tragic character, because at the end of the game he can go off with his fiancee and rule Chalphy and have a nice full "normal" life ahead of him.
What could have been improved or changed with regards to the character.
Gen 1: be a #@$%ing tactician, dammit. Gen2: not get sidelined for a couple of chapters. More bonding with the Tirnanogue boys would've fleshed out their wafer-thin figures.
My number one wish for this character.
A nice happy ending is implied for his character and I hope he gets it. He's earned it.
