Daylilies 4 EVA
Apr. 21st, 2013 10:53 pmSo, I'm pretty sure most of y'all know about my obsession with edible flowers. Roses, lavender, lilac, orchid, jasmine, violet, yucca and squash blossom... I've either eaten it, drunk it, or tried to.
Well, some of these flowers come from plants that are good all-around vegetables. I'd read that the young, tender shoots of Hemerocallis aka Daylily make for good eatin' but up to now I hadn't tried it. Well, we had some excess lilies popping up through the lawn at the house in Detroit we've been cleaning and selling, so today I made a run on the place to get some lilies for dinner.
Note: Hemerocallis is edible, and the boring orange kind (H. fulva) are preferred to the fancy colored varieties which can sometimes taste weird or maybe make you sick. Don't eat Tiger Lilies, Madonna Lilies, Oriental Lilies, Asiatic Lilies or any of the rest because we'll likely both regret it. Lilies are like mushrooms-- know what you're doing or just don't even go there. And I mean KNOW like you know the difference between your best friend and some random person in their age bracket.
Anyway, I got a little basket full of shoots five inches or less in length. I took 'em home, washed them good, and steamed them in a little water with some pats of butter on top. They were delicious. Delicious. They're like the good parts of the flavor profile of baby spinach or asparagus with none of the bitterness. My most excellent spouse and I polished off that bowl within minutes and would've wanted seconds if I hadn't run out of lily shoots. Now, that's just as well, as Hemerocallis is reputed to be mildly hallucinogenic and a bit of a purgative if you eat too much.

I also went to a really cool restaurant called Vinsetta Garage yesterday and had a duck burger with a rum-spiked chocolate malt for dinner. Yum.
