Red Walnuts
Jan. 5th, 2013 12:54 pmI've been grappling with black walnuts for some years now. First, you have to find them. Then, you need to find time to use them before they go rancid... unless they're already rancid when you get 'em. Sometimes it's hard to tell. Then, once you've baked something with them, you face the backlash from relatives who think you've done something totally gross and ruined good desserts with these little chunks of poison.
Let's just say my spouse regrets the giant bag of black walnuts he got me from Costco. He was trying to be nice, and it turns out he bloody hates black walnuts. As for me, I seem to be overcompensating for the black walnut bonbons I liked as a kid that Sees stopped making decades ago.
And now red walnuts have hit the scene. Where do I find these babies? Hell, if I'd taken that full scholarship to UC-Davis and gone into plant genetics like I was supposed to, I could've helped create these babies. :(
If all goes well, I will be in Brooklyn two weekends from today. Maybe red walnuts will be obtainable.
