Apples and Honey
Nov. 17th, 2012 12:48 pmI know the economy's picking up now because the upscale fruit market in town is carrying heirloom apples again. I haven't seen them since... '07?
Some heirloom apples are only good for pies 'n' cider, but I did pick up two varieties that were good for the lunchbox: Spitzenberg, which looked a bit like a small Gala, and Orleans Reinette, which has the antique-apple squatness and coloring. The Spitzenberg has a nice texture and a good complex flavor, and the Reinette tasted like the holidays-- orange and spice. The Reinette was a little mealy but it's worth it for the flavor.

One of my co-workers is now selling his own honey. I bought a two-pound jar off him this week and it's actually really nice stuff. It's "wildflower" honey, but with a pleasant color and texture similar to orange blossom honey and a really good flavor. I'm impressed.
