Regarding MyUnit
Oct. 5th, 2011 06:17 pmI was going to write this as a compare-contrast thing for MyUnit vs Tactician, but that got boring after three bullet points. So we'll just cut to the chase:
MyUnit, aka Chris, is not an OC and should not be approached as such.
Yes, you can name MyUnit anything you like, from your own name to Jesucristo to Mooncloud Dreamflower. Actually, I think that last one exceeds the character count, but no matter. Yes, you can build MyUnit as you like, decking him/her out with eyepatches, face paint, an afro, or all of the above. Yes, you can choose his/her class. Yes, you can give MyUnit (YourUnit?) selected attributes, from parentage to a "future."
Still not an OC. You know why? No, not the sketchy backstory about hailing from the village of Sera and having a knight for a grandfather, though there is that. MyUnit has something that Tactician lacks and that "blank slate" characters like Link or the heroes of Dragon Quest IX lack.
Dialogue. Tons of it. Storyline dialogue plus supports with every playable character in FE12. Chris likely has the bulk of the dialogue in the longest FE script to date. So, yeah... you can decide that "Chris" is really Marth's illegitimate younger brother looking for his own share in the spotlight, or that femme!Chris is really Mia in disguise (I guess she was chasing after Ike and got lost), but that's what the handy label "AU" is for. Actually, the Mia idea isn't so off-base, given that the personality of Chris, from the fan-translations I've read, is marked by an obsession with training and challenging people to matches... in addition to being fairly bland and (of course) sickeningly obsessed with Marth. And also dimwitted and annoying at key moments, but that seems to be the case for most of the FE12 cast. :/
In conclusion, while MyUnit is a customizable character, there is a definite "Chris" characterization and he is neither a blank slate nor your own personal OC. Treating him as an OC leads to instant AU status, which is perfectly fine (and might be more enjoyable than the real thing) but people should at least be aware of it.
