 I've pimped this before, but those of you scratching your heads over fannish terminology and its mutations should really spend some time here.

This provides an excellent snapshot of where fanfiction's navel-gazing contingent was during the transitions from 'zines to single-fandom-archives, on its way toward the modern state of affairs.  There are many competing viewpoints here, so I do not necessarily endorse any of the essays collected here (though the archive owner, Cereta aka Lucy, always seemed pretty cool and reasonable).

But this is where I came onto to scene-- when words like "slash" and "Mary Sue" meant something different than today, when genres like "smarm" still existed as such (but barely), and when people felt the need to explain, over and over, why they even engaged in that deviant activity known as fanfiction to start with.
