This blog index linked to "Troublesome Insects" because I mentioned child abuse in the disclaimer.  It's gone off the main page of the index now, but wtf, man.

So, I finished that Yumina story yesterday, right in time for the contest deadline.  I found a couple of grammar nitpicks in the version posted at [livejournal.com profile] fe_contest , and I'll want to fix those and maybe add some deleted scenes back in before posting it on ffnet or DA.

Anyway, it's quite a dark story, though not nearly as dark as it was going to be originally.  The framing device of Yumina preparing for her final exams at Elice's Academy of Magic helped rein in my gory imagination a bit, so it ends with the suggestion that Yumina is going to do something Very Bad instead of having her follow through on it.  Nonetheless, writing it was pretty draining, not least because I had to deal with the fanficcing pitfall of extreme abuse and neglect of young children-- I think the math works out so they'd be about ten when they get locked up by Gharnef's stooges.  When canon flat-out states that Yumina and her brother were shut away in a dark room and maltreated to the verge of death, that doesn't give me leeway to pretend the twins merely endured some kind of boring, chaperoned house arrest.

I think this might have gotten the Yumina bug out of my system, but I'm not entirely sure.  There's a lot in the 'fic that may be impenetrable to the casual fan or someone who is familiar with Shadow Dragon but not FE3, so I'll crank out a full Author's Notes at some point in the near future.  I also glossed over both the political situation at large and some of the rococo game events-- the former because Yumina doesn't care, and the latter because I wanted to eliminate as many distractions as possible.  I cut out just about anything that didn't pertain to Yumina herself, her brother Yubello, and the contrasting sibling pair of Elice'n'Marth.  To a certain extent, the 'fic assumes that the reader is already familiar with the basic Elice'n'Marth backstory (sacrifice, escape, rescue, rinse, repeat); I didn't have a smooth way to work that exposition in, but a reader who knows that backstory will pick up on key things that a reader without that knowledge will miss.  I guess that's just another pitfall of fanfiction.

I swear, readers are going to get the idea I seriously detest Marth or something.  I don't.  Really, I don't.  But there's things I'm driven to explore, and a lot of them aren't very nice.
