Abel was the son of a respectable middle-class town cleric and a soldier who abandoned the family and/or died when Abel was a child. His mother was very pleased to get her only son a place as a trainee knight. Abel is a little less of a hardcore monarchist that, say, Cain, who is from a knightly family (Jagen's nephew in my headcanon); he's an Altean patriot but without quite the same personal attachment to Marth as Cain and Gordin had. Abel and Palla had an affair during the War of Darkness, but Palla kind of clammed up afterward and was sending what Abel interpreted as mixed signals, so he doesn't understand the depth of her feelings. He fell head-over-heels for Est when the Peg Sisters stopped in Altea on their way back to Macedon from that FE2 "vacation" and Est married him that year and never returned to Macedon.

They never reunite.
