Thracia 776 Manga Get!

We interrupt the oh-so-exciting account of my playthrough of FE4 to announce that I have just received in the mail the three-volume manga adaptation of Thracia 776 by Yuna Takanagi.  Not that I can read a word of it, besides the back cover, which uses the English-language intro to FE5 as its synopsis.  Make that Engrish language, as IIRC the actual intro wasn't this mangled.  But I can look at the pretty pix and piece some stuff together based on the game, can't I?

Now, three volumes is awfully... concise... for a game as convoluted plot-wise as any other FE game.  Maki Hakoda's FE1 manga was about twelve volumes (of the same size and thickness) and didn't even tell the whole story.  So, either this is a masterpiece of storytelling or things got left out.

Guess which option is correct. )

Weekend Update

So, I saw some recently posted Sety/Arthur fanart over on tumblr, and my initial reaction was, "Oh, meh.  The Silesian kids and the Freege kids again."  Then I realized I actually prefer Sety/Arthur to either Arthur/Fee or Sety/Tinny.  Arthur'd make a lovely Queen of Silesia, wouldn't he?

For those of you following the Oosawa FE4 manga, it's been updated in recent weeks.

Spoilers )

I hope the Fujimori one gets updated before too much longer.

FE4: Fujimori Nuts manga review

Just to document the total waste of my weekend productivity...

So. After getting as far as I could with the Oosawa manga and completing the Fuyuki one, I decided to give the "comic" Fujimori Seisen no Keifu manga another chance. I've seen many fans swear that it's the best adaptation of FE4 around.

I'm not going to agree until the rest is translated and I see where it's going, but it's pretty darned good thus far (it's been translated into English up to the recruitment of Jamuka). It just comes at the material from a different approach-- instead of trying to wring it for drama, as Oosawa does, Fujimori goes all tongue-in-cheek, fourth-wall-busting, absurdist.

Spoilers! And opinions. )

I recommend that people at least give this one a look.

"Light Inheritor" Review

OK.  So, I finally bothered to read Fuyuki Nea's Light Inheritor FE4 manga, which covers the exploits of the 2nd Gen.  I'd been avoiding it because I heard it contained heavy Celice/Leaf subtext with a jealous!Nanna angle, which sounded about as appealing as cleaning the basement.

This particular rumor is not true (though Celice does get upset when he catches Leaf and Nanna holding hands).  That said, it's romance-driven in a way that actually side-steps the genuine plot of 2nd Gen FE4.  Now, this could be a good thing, because from what I've seen, 2nd Gen is generally regarded to be the weaker half dramatically.  I like it for the Levin angle and the Thracia angle, but I'll admit I don't give a damn about half the kids and in many cases I prefer the replacement characters.  But the execution of this is just... weird.

Spoilers, if you care )

Thoughts on the Oosawa FE4 Manga

I'd only glanced over it before because 1) it's long 2) reading manga online irritates me-- without a physical book in my hands it's hard to skim the boring stuff.   I plowed through a bunch of it this weekend, though.

Takeaways:

Mild spoilers, I guess. )
