Top Eleven Fire Emblem Characters (9)
I appreciate Fire Emblem's Old Guys. I don't mean the Marcus-types (though they're good too), or the ancient sage-types, but the older dude, usually heavily armored, that you get at the middle or end of the game. The one with crap stats and an affinity for small children. I almost always use Lorenz in Shadow Dragon because I think he's a great character and his story is heart-rending.
The Lorenz archetype persists through the series-- Hannibal, Douglas, Tauroneo-- but Magvel presented the best of the lot, IMO.
Coming in at #9... Duessel.
Raphi did a great write-up on Ol' Obsidian here, and I'll admit that seeing her Duessel-love prompted me to do this meme in the first place.
I was eager to recruit Duessel on my very first playthrough, because I'd read his Ephraim supports and I thought they were great. It impressed me that Ephraim even had supports with the obligatory Old Dude No One Is Going to Use, and I liked what they showcased of both Ephraim and Duessel.
Especially compared with the Tana supports, cough.
The small and tight-knit cast of FE8 is (IMO and that of some of you all) arguably the best-integrated cast in the series, and Duessel's connections with Ephraim and with his three fellow "traitors" are darned good ones (for all the reasons Raphi mentioned), and not just a vehicle for Valter's backstory. And, while I always somehow pair up Amelia with Franz in-game, her ending with Duessel (he reunites her with her mother, she becomes his apprentice/companion) is just... heartwarming.
While I remain deeply partial to Lorenz, Duessel's life-affirming and constructive endings (as opposed to, oh, ritual suicide) give him the edge and push him into my Top Eleven.
