FE8 Noodling

Dire Straits's Brothers In Arms is my ultimate FE8-writing music.  It just works so, so well-- especially the title track, "Ride Across the River," and "The Man's Too Strong."  Though the last could work for a number of games.

Man, Seth/Eirika is a pairing I'm so on the fence about.  Sometimes I love it, and sometimes I just get sick of it.  I read this story and was really turned off.  I'm still trying to formulate a review for it.

Speaking of Seth/Eirika, I picked up some books for the holidays and am back at work on "Borderline" again.  I scrapped some bits from Orson's POV and decided to use his love letters to Monica (modeled off nineteenth-century examples) as a device instead, which is some pretty twisted fun.  Little nothings like "I shall never grow tired of hearing you say you love me" just sound different when it's Orson/Monica we're talking about.

I've been trying to formulate a review for the same story since I read it. I can't say what exactly it is that irks me about it, even though I like Seth/Eirika. I think it might be that it turns chillin' with Lyon into some kind of ordeal for Eirika, even though every time she mentions it, it's with fondness. It seems to create pain with the sole purpose of making Seth look like a hero, and I just don't think he needs help with that.

And, uh, that Orson idea sounds amazing. Just saying.

That's a huge part of it, and I just now posted a review saying exactly that. If Eirika loathes being in Grado that much, she's OOC. If Seth is just projecting all the misery and unhappiness onto her, then he's kind of a creepy perv and should be hanging out with Carlyle. Not that Seth might not have an inner perv, but the reviewer who compared this 'fic to Lolita had a point.

And, uh, that Orson idea sounds amazing. Just saying.

Thanks. It'll take a while to finish... it's this Civil War (and Mexican War) AU I started writing for Trevor X on a dare that exploded into this monster project.

Honestly, if it had come off like unreliable-narrator Seth projecting and him being a creeper, it would have been so much better, because I can absolutely see a twisted version of him thinking ill of anyone who tries to associate with her. Instead it contradicts Eirika's personality, and somehow manages to make Lyon even more pathetic than most writers do.
Alas.

AUs are amazing, oh man.
no I'm totally not gushing, not one bit.

Hngg, I saw that and considered reading it. But now I'm not so sure I want to. Lol. But then again, man the FE fandom needs reviews. So torn. :/

Well, I left it a "nice descriptive writing, BUT..." review. Because hey, why not? That writer is pretty darned good (I liked their Marisa/Gerik 'fic from a while back), but this particular story crossed a line with me, so why not be honest about it?

...eugh. Way to turn Eirika into a stereotypical Oppressed Rebellious Princess, fic. And the treatment of Lyon makes me cringe.
