I think Original Recipe Trabant vs. Super Retcon Trabant is the crux of the problem for me. I tend to like morally gray villains, and even though one Trabant is much more to the darker side of things, I think they both have their merits. My problem is that attempting to reconcile the two kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

But I totally agree that retcons or not, just being a savvy dude in a world full of questionable decision makers is appealing on its own, and I really like the point you made comparing him to Alvis. I like that about Trabant a lot too, but I never considered it in that light before.

(And I agree about his design as well. I think Judgral has aesthetically pleasing wyvern knights. :-P)

I do think FE5 went too far in trying to absolve him of the whole massacre dealie. Like, please explain this extraordinary claim, game. Brainwashing? Doppleganger? What?

Whatever they meant, that line pushes him out of "morally gray villain" and almost into "tarnished martyr" which just... yeah. Bad taste in the mouth.
