I think Original Recipe Trabant vs. Super Retcon Trabant is the crux of the problem for me. I tend to like morally gray villains, and even though one Trabant is much more to the darker side of things, I think they both have their merits. My problem is that attempting to reconcile the two kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
But I totally agree that retcons or not, just being a savvy dude in a world full of questionable decision makers is appealing on its own, and I really like the point you made comparing him to Alvis. I like that about Trabant a lot too, but I never considered it in that light before.
(And I agree about his design as well. I think Judgral has aesthetically pleasing wyvern knights. :-P)
