I liked Wil a lot more than Lyra, but I didn't love him. And Lyra was just so... not human... to me that I didn't care about their grand relationship, even though I'd known people for years who held that up as a high pairing of YA lit, or any lit. I cared about the boy who got murdered in The Golden Compass more than Lyra.
Killing off characters=/=deep great literature, world.
It's just a more sophisticated version of A Taste of Blackberries-- the only real value is to teach kids that random terrible things happen.
